The Effects of Ankylosing Spondylitis on the Body

Nervous system

Ankylosing Spondylitis can affect the nervous system if early treatment is not received. In severe cases, your nerves may develop scars at the spine’s base. Nerve injury at the spine’s base can result in urinary incontinence [2], reduced sexual desire, and inability to control your bowel.

The effects of AS are commonly seen in the eyes. Studies show that 2 in 4 people with AS experience eye inflammation or uveitis.  The major symptoms of eye inflammation are pain and redness in the eye. It is severe in bright light and can cause eyes problem if it is not attended to.

It would help to visit your health care provider if you experience any symptoms of eye inflammation. Complications such as loss of sight can be prevented by early detection.
