An Overview of EGFR Mutation Lung Cancer

What types of lung cancer are connected to EGFR mutation?

There are basically two types of lung cancer, they are:

  • small cell lung cancer (SCLC)
  • non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
  • About 80 to 85 percent of all lung cancers are NSCLC.
  • There are three main types of NSCLC:
  • Adenocarcinomas. Adenocarcinomas are the most common type of NSCLC, they make up 60 percent of all NSCLC cases. Adenocarcinomas form in the outer area of the lung.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common type of NSCLC. This type usually forms near the bronchial tubes and makes up 30 to 35 percent of NSCLC cases.
  • Large cell carcinoma. This type is rarer than the previous two types and can be more difficult to recover from. It starts anywhere in the lungs and gradually spreads all over.
  • In general, large cell carcinoma tends to spread faster than adenocarcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma.

Worldwide study has shown that about 32.4 percent of NSCLCs involve EGFR mutations.
