Lumpectomy

A lumpectomy is also called a partial mastectomy, segmental mastectomy, quadrantectomy, or breast-conserving surgery. [3] This is because, unlike a mastectomy, only part of the breast is removed. The cancer type, tumor size, and breast size are important considerations when deciding how much breast tissue should be excised.

This is usually used for small tumors. The surgeons will remove the tumor and some of the healthy tissue surrounding it. This healthy tissue will be tested for cancer traces because not all cancer cells are visible as tumors. If this tissue show signs of cancer, more tissue may need to be removed. Doctors may also recommend radiation therapy to kill off the remaining cancerous cells.
