Cervical Cancer – Causes and Risk Factors

Sexually Transmitted Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

HPV infection is the most common factor that contributes to one developing cervical cancer. Most people contract HPV when they become sexually active. Being sexually active and having multiple sexual partners at a young age increases the risk of contracting HPV. However, not all cases of HPV can cause cancer. There are about 100 types of HPV. Not all HPV infections are connected to cancer, and even though it is the number one risk factor, it still does not mean you would develop cervical cancer when you have it.
