Types of oesophagal cancer

Oesophageal cancer can be grouped into different classes, depending on the type of cells involved. The treatment you receive depends on the type of oesophagal cancer you have. They include:

  • Adenocarcinoma: Adenocarcinoma occurs in the cells of mucus-secreting glands in the oesophagus. This type is more common in the inferior part of the oesophagus. According to research, it is the most common type of oesophagal cancer in the United States and more common in white men.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma: The squamous cells are flat, thin cells that are found on the surface of the oesophagus. Squamous cell carcinoma commonly occurs in the superior and inferior portions of the oesophagus. According to research, it is the most dominant type in the world.

  • Small cell carcinoma
