The main cause of oesophagal cancer is unknown. Experts need to do more research to understand the factors responsible for the condition. However, several theories say that the condition is caused by mutations in the cells of the oesophagus. These mutations result in uncontrollable cell growth and division. When the number of cells increases, they form a tumour in the oesophagus that grows into neighbouring organs and spreads to other areas of the body.
