How is aortic dissection diagnosed?

To diagnose aortic dissection, your healthcare provider may perform a CT scan of the aorta to clearly see any tears in the aorta. The scan will also help detect target areas for surgery.

Your healthcare provider may also use the following to diagnose aortic dissection:

  • A chest X-ray
  • A contrast-enhanced CT scan
  • A transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE): A TEE is done by passing a device that releases sound waves down your throat until it is close to the area at the level of your heart. Then, an ultrasound wave is used to get an image of your heart and aorta.
  • An MRI scan with angiography
