Common Symptoms of Colitis

Fever and Diarrhea

Depending on the underlying cause of colitis, there may be the presence of fever associated with chills and other symptoms of infection and inflammation. Fever is present in about 40 percent of patients at the time of diagnosis. It is typically chronic and low grade and sometimes may not even be noticed.

In severe cases, the fever may be very serious, with the individual running a very high-temperature of more than 39℃.

A classical symptom of colitis is diarrhea [1] with increased stooling urgency. The desire to empty your colon can come quickly and desperately if your illness is serious. Often you would be able to predict when this will happen. The need to go to the toilet comes right after eating, much of the time. It can be made worse by some types of food, such as spicy dishes or high-fiber food.

This desire to defecate can be so sudden and unpredictable at other times. Due to a desire to use the bathroom, it is not unusual for you to even wake up in the middle of the night. It can be difficult to suppress this urge before one often gets to the toilet. In some other cases, the urge to defecate may come after using the toilet since one feel like the bowel is not yet empty.
