What are the Potential Complications of Ischemic Colitis?

According to research, the most common and dangerous complication of ischemic colitis is gangrene, or tissue death. This is caused by the reduced or loss of blood supply to your colon. If you experience gangrene or tissue death, as a result of IC, your doctor will recommend surgery to remove the dead tissue.
The following complications may also occur in people with ischemic colitis:
- Sepsis [7], which is a very severe and widespread bacterial infection
- A perforation, or hole, in your intestine
- Peritonitis, which is an inflammation of the tissue lining your abdomen
