What Is the Link Between Ulcerative Colitis and Thyroid Diseases?

Studies have shown that there is no clear link between these two diseases, that is, thyroid disease is not a symptom of ulcerative colitis and vice versa. However it is very possible for you to have both diseases at the same time. According to a 2017 study made in an Asian population, it was found that 4.1% of patients who have ulcerative colitis, have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism in the past.
However there are some underlying conditions that are linked to both diseases. These conditions include:
- Mutation of genes
- Abnormal immune system: As explained earlier in this article, the immune system can abnormally attack the colon or thyroid and increase the risk of having both diseases.
- Excess bacteria in the intestines: This can trigger invasion of immune cells, which causes inflammation and increases the risk of having ulcerative colitis.
Symptoms that may be associated with both conditions include:
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Joint and muscle pain
- Excessive sweating
- Constant changes in heart rate
- Anxiety and irritability
It is advisable to see your doctor if you feel any of these symptoms.
