Types of Colon Polyps

The risk factors and symptoms of colon polyps usually depend on the type. Also, the severity of the condition significantly depends on the size of the polyp.

A 2014 study showed that polyps of 5 millimeters (mm) or less were less likely to develop into a cancerous condition, while those between 1.5 and 3.5 centimeters (cm) had a malignancy potential of 19 to 43%.

Polyps are majorly divided into two types; hyperplastic and adenomatous polyps:

Hyperplastic Polyps

Hyperplastic polyps, also known as inflammatory polyps, are usually benign and may not result in a low malignancy potential. These polyps rarely progress to become cancerous.
