8 Main Causes of Constipation

Pregnancy

Constipation is one of the many symptoms of pregnancy. [5] It may be experienced at the early stages or later during the trimester. Not every pregnant woman suffers from this symptom.

This condition is caused by the increase in the production of the female hormone called progesterone. High amounts of this hormone during pregnancy cause all the body’s muscles to relax and that includes muscles in the digestive tract. Slow-moving digestive organs like the intestines mean delayed digestion, leading to constipation. The body increases the woman’s progesterone levels, causing the digestive muscles to relax. This allows food to remain longer in the digestive tract for adequate nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream for the baby’s healthy development.

Regular intake of fluids, frequent physical activities, and the add of fiber into your diet may improve symptoms of constipation during pregnancy.
