Management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids, like prednisone are known to reduce swelling and irritation in the airway. They are more effective if you have ever come in contact with an irritant or infection such as:

  • Secondhand smoke
  • Extreme temperatures
  • Harsh fumes

Corticosteroids can be administered via:

  • Inhaler
  • Nebulizer
  • Injection
  • Tablet

It is important to know that corticosteroids can also lead to some dangerous side effects. For example, when administered in tablet form, it can lead to:

  • Elevated blood sugar levels [2]
  • Weight gain [3]
  • Water retention

If you take corticosteroids for a long period, they can lead to weakening of the bones and immune system. Inhale forms of corticosteroids have less side effects and can be used for maintenance, especially in asthma patients. They may also be used in patients with COPD who have regular exacerbations.
