Is Crohn’s Disease Contagious?

Causes of Crohn’s Disease

Doctors have confirmed exactly one cause of Crohn’s disease. Researchers believe that Crohn’s disease comes from a combination of genetic, environmental, and intestinal factors. None of these factors are thought to have a contagious origin.

However, these factors can trigger the body’s immune system to attack your intestines and cause inflammation. Your immune system attacking your intestines when it is supposed to protect them is the reason the disease is considered an autoimmune disorder.

Certain risk factors may increase your chances of getting Crohn’s disease, such as:

  • Smoking
  • Taking certain medications, like antibiotics, NSAIDs [8], and birth control pills
  • A high fat diet

A primary and the most significant risk of Crohn’s disease is Smoking.
