Diagnosis of gastroparesis

Your doctor will think about several factors before diagnosing you with diabetic gastroparesis. They will consider your medical history and symptoms and do a physical exam to check for signs of gastroparesis. These signs may include:
- Dehydration
- Malnutrition
- Abdomen tenderness or pain
Your doctor may also require blood or urine tests to see if there are any complications of gastroparesis. Imaging tests may also be used to check for any abdominal blockage.
Some other tests are done by the doctor such as esophagogastroduodenoscopy or gastric emptying scintigraphy.
As esophagogastroduodenoscopy can rule out infections and check if there is any food left in the stomach. Gastric emptying scintigraphy is a tool used for testing gastric emptying. It is referred to as the gold standard in the diagnosis of gastroparesis.
