Type 2 Diabetes – Symptoms, Causes, Risk Factors, Prevention and More

Symptoms and Causes of Type 2 Diabetes

Most of the time the disease develops very slowly and may not be visible at first. The mild symptoms are: fatigue, blurry vision, excessive urination, constant hunger, numbness in the feet or hands, continuous thirst, weight loss, slow healing of sores, frequent infections. Acanthosis nigricans [1] which is the occurrence of dark rashes around the neck or armpit, it is a sign of the body severely being resistant to insulin and it advised to visit the doctor.

The pancreas is where the hormone insulin is produced. It is the insulin that turns glucose or a type of sugar from the food you eat to energy. Type 2 diabetes doesn’t allow the insulin to get into the cells and hence filling the cells with glucose. There are different conditions that lead to this disease and they are:

  • Genes– the mutations in genes involved in controlling the glucose levels is a major cause of type 2 diabetes. Some researchers have also stated that different bits of the DNA can affect the production of insulin.
  • Overweight/ Obesity: Excess of fat in the body particularly in the middle area of the body can affect the production of insulin.
  • Poor communication among cells: when cells send out wrong signals or when the cells don’t understand the signals given, it can also lead to poor production of insulin.
  • The presence of too much glucose in the liver can also alter the production of insulin in the body.
