Risk Factors of Type 2 Diabetes

  • Age– the older one becomes the higher the risk of type 2 diabetes. At the age of 45 and also being overweight the risk of type 2 diabetes begins to rise and the risk becomes higher at the age of 65.
  • Race and ethnicity– people from a specific race and regions are highly prone to type 2 diabetes compared to the white people. People from ethnicities like Hispanic, Asian people, pacific islanders, Native American and blacks.
  • Fat distribution– uneven distribution of fat can lead to this type of disease. When the fat that is meant to be stored in the hip and thigh gets stored in the abdomen, it can lead to diabetes type 2. The risk of this disease increases when the waist measurements of a man is above 40 inches and in women when the waist measurement is above 35 inches.
  • Inactivity– the less active the body becomes the higher the risk of this disease. Physical activities or exercises helps to control the weight and fat levels and ensures the proper usage of glucose. The cells are able to produce enough insulin and make good use of the insulin produced.
  • Prediabetes: this is a condition in which the blood sugar level is higher than normal but not enough to be classified as diabetes. It is a milder form of this disease. If this condition is left untreated and not immediately attended to it can lead to the higher stage which is type 2 diabetes.
  • Blood lipid levels: a person with low level of lipoprotein cholesterol (the good cholesterol) [2] is at risk of this disease. The presence of high blood triglyceride in the blood can also be a risk of getting this condition.
