Home Remedies that Can Negatively Affect the Ears

It is safe to remove excess earwax in the ear at home. However, there are certain home treatments that may cause more harm than good in the ear. Some cases of earwax accumulation may require the attention of a medical doctor. It would help to contact your doctor immediately if the remedies listed above do not improve the condition.
To prevent health complications, doctors recommend staying away from the following remedies:
- Small objects: Do not use small objects like pen caps or bobby pins to remove earwax in your ears. Just like the old saying goes, “Never put anything in your ear that’s smaller than your elbow.”
- Cotton swabs: They look harmless and perfect for your ears, but they are too small to be used to clean the ears. If used frequently, they can push earwax to the eardrum and cause blockage.
- Ear candles: Various studies show that ear candles can cause injuries in the ear canals such as punctured eardrums and burns. Avoid using them to clean out earwax.
