Systemic Corticosteroids

Despite frequent use, systemic corticosteroid therapy (SC) in the treatment of AD is limited by the known side effects and the scarcity of controlled studies in the long term. Therefore, its use must be extremely cautious and restricted to exceptional cases. Some patients may benefit from rapid CS courses in severe worsening; however, clinical improvement is often associated with the rebound effect, which is the recurrence of symptoms after medication withdrawal, resulting in cases of difficult control.
They should only be used under the doctor’s supervision since, for example, they can exacerbate symptoms or cause infections. Other creams may be indicated by the doctor as maintenance therapy. It is also advised to consult a pediatrician for the right care in the case of atopic dermatitis in infants, as not all medications can be used in children.
