Fibromyalgia: Foods to Eat and Avoid

Vitamin D

In a report by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) [6], vitamin D deficiency may have a direct impact on the symptoms of fibromyalgia symptoms. There are many good sources of vitamin D in diet. Examples include:

egg yolks

orange juice fortified with vitamin D

tuna, canned in water

swordfish and salmon

whole-grain cereals fortified with vitamin D

low fat yogurt fortified with vitamin D

Notes that foods that have vitamin D may not necessarily cause a reduction in the symptoms of the disease of all individuals that have fibromyalgia. Vitamin D however, has an overall health benefit e.g. healthier and stronger bones.

The Mediterranean diet is particularly rich in fruits, fish, vegetables, and other anti-inflammatory dietary food.

Go Vegetarian

Some research have looked at how certain diet have impacts on the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Some research have proved that eating solely vegetarian or vegan diet [7], which is especially rich in antioxidants, may help reduce the symptoms of fibromyalgia. After a study in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, it was noted that individuals that ate more of raw vegetarian foods experienced less pain than others who do not. The flip side to this diet is that it is very restrictive and not everyone can can abide by it or comply easily.
