Fibromyalgia: Foods to Eat and Avoid

Carbohydrates

Refined carbohydrates [9] are usually quickly digested. Examples include pastries, many breads, cookies, and white rice. They are responsible for spike in blood sugar levels in some cases. The energy provided by these refined carbohydrates however, doesn’t last for long and most times the level of sugar in the blood drops drastically to previous level, thus, making the individual to feel hungry again. These changes in blood sugar level often worsen fibromyalgia pain and causes extreme fatigue. It is essential that individuals that has fibromyalgia takes in carbohydrates that contains whole wheat since they digest slowly and prevent the rapid rise and fall of blood sugar level caused by other carbohydrates.

A small study conducted was based on women living with fibromyalgia who also had food sensitivity and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Irritable bowel syndrome is also present in many people with fibromyalgia.

A 50 percent reduction in irritable bowel symptoms and a 22 percent decrease in other symptoms, including pain, were recorded when women cut back on eating a particular group of carbohydrates. The reduced carbohydrates were a form of carbohydrates type were not well absorbed from the digestive tract in the small intestine. Lactose (a protein present in milk and other dairy foods), fructose (which is sewn in certain fruits, honey, vegetables, and other sweeteners) and some grains [10] are among these carbohydrates.
