Tophi

This refers to the deposition of small white collection of uric acid crystals under the skin. It is a common symptom of chronic gout. They can be easily seen through the skin and can be felt. They are usually hard and painless but can cause bone erosion and subsequent chronic arthritis. Tophi commonly occur over the top of the toes, front of the knee, at the back of the heel, at the back of the fingers and wrists, around the elbow and on the ears. They can become inflamed, and they can break down and begin to leak pus-like fluid.

Discomfort around the Affected Joints

Even without pain or after the pain has subsided, the feeling of discomfort continues to linger on the affected joints. The person continues to feel s if all is not right with the affected joint. This may last for several weeks before wearing off.
