Heart Disease Causes and Risk Factors

High blood cholesterol levels

High blood cholesterol level is another common cause [6] of cardiovascular diseases. If you consume more cholesterol than the body needs to function, the extra amount stores up in the walls of the arteries causing them to narrow. The narrowed arteries can reduce blood supply to important organs like the heart, kidney, and brain.

There are two types of blood cholesterol; good fats (low-density lipoprotein (LDL)), and bad fats (high-density lipoprotein (HDL)). Ensure that the bulk of your diet provides LDL cholesterol rather than HDL because the former reduces your risk of cardiovascular diseases.
