Heart Murmur: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment

What Is Heart Murmur?

Valves in your heart open and close with each heartbeat, allowing blood to flow. There are two sounds made as the valves close: a “lub” and a “dub.” A heart murmur is when your heart instead generates a whooshing or swishing noise. A murmur indicates irregular blood flow across your heart valves.

A murmur could indicate a heart condition. However, heart murmurs can also be found in healthy individuals without any heart problems (referred to as “innocent” heart murmurs).

Heart murmurs are quite common esp. in children. In fact most people had a heart murmur at some point during childhood.
