Treatment and Outlook of Heart Murmurs
Most cases of heart murmurs do not need any treatment and are not a cause for concern. However, if the heart murmur is traced to a more serious condition, you may need:
- Medication: iron to correct anemia or drugs to slow thyroid gland.
- Surgery: either to correct or replace a valve.
There is currently no way to prevent heart murmurs. But you can avoid serious health issues that can lead to it by undergoing regular heart checkups.
The prognosis for those who have a heart murmur depends on the ailment that caused it. A murmur associated with pregnancy often disappears after delivery, and children frequently outgrow childhood murmurs. However, murmurs linked to cardiac issues need to be treated by a doctor.
