Leukopenia: 10 Facts to know

Bacteria & Viruses

Bacterial infections can lead to leukopenia if it causes the body to use high amounts of blood cells faster than they can be replaced. Tuberculosis is a common bacterial infection that significantly affects the number of white blood cells in the body, causing them to die at an accelerated pace.

Studies have shown that viral infections malaria or HIV/AIDS tend to damage the bone marrow. The human immunodeficiency virus and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome kill the white blood cells and weaken the immune system. HIV/AIDS reduces white blood cell count and may lead to other health problems.
