9 Common Treatments for Cold Sores

Sunscreen

Sunburns can trigger or increase the pains from a cold sore. Therefore, using sunscreen when under the sun can help reduce discomfort. They stop radiations from the sun getting into the sores, therefore, preventing the worsening of the cold sores. They protect the lips while the cold sore is healing and prevent future outbreaks when used daily on the lips. Patients can use SPF 30 and apply it whenever they are going under the sun. Sunscreens can be bought online or at pharmacy shops.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C cannot wholly eradicate cold sores, and it helps with the healing process. Vitamin C  [2] is an antioxidant that assists the immune system and helps with wound healing. Foods rich in vitamin C are berries (strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries), kiwis, tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, and spinach.

A study was done in 1995, and it was discovered that dabbing a sore with diluted ascorbic acid- a naturally occurring vitamin C reduces the symptoms of a cold sore. Vitamin C sometimes serves as an antiviral substance that helps to fight herpes viruses.
