Hodgkin Lymphoma: 6 Important Facts to Know

Stages

Hodgkin’s disease is assigned specific stages depending on the severity and extent of the damage. These stages help doctors determine treatment options and outlook. The stages of Hodgkin lymphoma [6] are:

  • Stage 1 (early stage): The cancer is only in one lymph node area or one area of an organ.
  • Stage 2 (localized advanced): The cancer has advanced to two lymph node areas on one side of the diaphragm or one lymph node and a nearby organ.
  • Stage 3 (advanced): The cancer is present in lymph node areas above and below the diaphragm or one lymph node region and one organ on opposite sides of the diaphragm.
  • Stage 4 (widespread): The cancer has spread past the lymph nodes into other areas, such as the liver, lung, and bone marrow.

Treatment

Treatment for Hodgkin’s disease depends on the stage and type. General treatments include chemotherapy and radiation therapy [7].

If you do not respond to either treatment, immunotherapy or stem cell transplant may be recommended.

Conclusion

Hodgkin lymphoma is a relatively rare cancer that can spread throughout the body quickly. While a diagnosis with the condition can be difficult to take in, the outlook is good if discovered early. Up to 85 percent of people diagnosed live up to five years and most make full recovery.
