HPV Vaccination – What Everyone Should Know

How Does HPV Cause Cancer?

There are more than 100 strains of HPV. Some of these strains do not cause health problems. In most cases, the HPV goes on its own without any treatment. However, different types, such as HPV 16 and HPV 18 can cause cancer. They are responsible for about 70% of all cervical cancers in the world and nearly 90% of anal cancers. Studies show that HPV 16 and HPV 18 may also cause penile, vaginal, vulvar, and oropharyngeal cancer.

Human Papillomavirus has proteins that inactivate tumor-suppressor genes and facilitate the viral invasion of cells. Healthy cells become abnormal and start to grow without control. After a while, the cells develop into tumors and cause cancer.
