HPV Vaccination – What Everyone Should Know

Advantages of the HPV Vaccine

The HPV vaccine provides maximum protection against HPV types 16 and 18. These two strains can cause certain cancers. Some vaccines may also offer protection against strains that can cause genital warts [3].

According to the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the three most effective vaccines for HPV include Gardasil, Gardasil 9, and Cervarix [4]. Each vaccine features a series of two or three injections into a muscle over six months depending on the age.

Gardasil 9 has been the only vaccine used in the United States of America for the past 7 years. The vaccine targets the most common types of HPV out of the three vaccines. You must receive all injections to get maximum protection from the Vaccine.

The three recognized vaccines offer protection against HPV types 16 and 18. These two types of vaccine are high-risk and can cause anal, vulvar, and cervical cancer. The Gardasil vaccine also offers protection against strains 6 and 11. These two strains are responsible for the genital warts that occur in HPV.
