Hepatitis C Screening: What to know

NAT for HCV RNA

This test is also referred to as a PCR test. It is a follow up test for people who get a reactive result to the HCV antibody test. It is conducted to confirm if you currently have the disease. Virus particles can be detected in blood 1 to 2 weeks after infection. With this test, you come out either negative which implies that you don’t currently have hepatitis C and there’s no need for additional testing or positive which implies that you currently have the virus and treatment is required.

HCV Genotype Test

This is a more specific test. It is done if you test positive to the NAT for HCV RNA test. It tells you which specific subtype of the virus you’ve contracted. This test will help your doctor determine which treatment and medication is best and most beneficial for you.
