Treatment Options for Autoimmune Hepatitis

Azathioprine

This is the most common immunomodulator for autoimmune hepatitis. Azathioprine (Imuran) works by interfering with the production of DNA molecules that causes inflammation. An immunomodulator is generally used to treat autoimmune disorders, like cancer and other inflammatory conditions that require the body’s immune system to be controlled.

Azathioprine may be used together with prednisone at the early stage of the condition. It can also be introduced at the late stage once the prednisone dosage has reduced and symptoms improved.

According to a 2017 study, the combination of azathioprine and prednisone caused remission in about 90 percent of people with autoimmune hepatitis.

A common side effect of Azathioprine is gastrointestinal distress. It is best to take smaller doses twice a day and a few hours apart to help prevent certain side effects. To be sure that you are handling the medication well and there are no serious side effects, your doctor may conduct some regular blood tests.
