Testicular Disorders: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment & More

Testicle disorder or disease can affect a man’s sexual functioning and fertility.

The testicles, also known as testes, are part of the male reproductive system. They are two oval organs about the size of large olives located inside the scrotum, the loose sac of skin that hangs behind the penis. The testicles are responsible for making male hormones, including testosterone, and produce sperm, the male reproductive cells. Testicular disorders can result to issues such as:

  • Hormonal imbalances.
  • Sexual dysfunction.
  • Infertility [1].

Testicular trauma

Testicular trauma is usually as a result of injury in the testicles. The testicles hang outside of the body, which makes them susceptible to injury. Testicular injuries are common during contact sports. To protect the testicles, men can wear an athletic cup while competing in any contact sport.

There are several symptoms associated with testicular trauma. They include:

  • Severe pain in the scrotum.
  • Bruising and/or swelling in the scrotum.
  • Pain and discomfort in the lower abdomen.
  • Nausea and/or vomiting.

Most of the time, the testicles can absorb the shock that comes from an injury without serious damage. In more severe injuries, treatment may be needed and you should seek medical attention.

In mild cases, your healthcare professional will likely recommend medication, rest and apply ice to the affected area. If your condition is more severe, your doctor will conduct an ultrasound scan and an imaging test will be ordered. If the trauma is severe, the testicle can rupture and blood can leak out. In these cases surgery is needed to stop the bleeding, repair the rupture and save the testicle.
