Changes in Appetite

When an individual is depressed, it may cause weight loss or weight gain due to appetite changes. The result of an appetite change is different in people. If an individual’s diet change is unintentional, it may signify a depressed feeling in such a person.

Loss of appetite is common in depression, but a significant number of individuals overeat due to the feeling of sadness. Overeating, in the case of depression, is not directly associated with hunger in any way. When depressed individuals eat too much, it can be called emotional eating.

It’s important to speak to the doctor if a change in appetite is observed alongside a feeling of guilt, loss of interest, changes in sleep patterns, or sadness. Individuals who experience overeating to avoid discussing their challenges should also consider consulting the doctor with immediate effect.
