Treatment for schizophrenia

There are several approaches to treatments for a person with schizophrenia. The goal of the treatment include:
- Targeting symptoms
- preventing relapse
- Increasing adaptive functioning so the person can be in the community
This is usually done with both medications and other treatments.
Treatment options
Treatment options can include:
- Antipsychotic medications, which are usually the first line of treatments
- Psychotherapy
- Individual therapy
- Group therapy
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) [5]
- Pharmacological therapy
- Assertive community therapy
- A multidisciplinary therapeutic team approach
- Help to reduce hospitalizations and homelessness
The treatment approach will depend on the specific symptoms you are experiencing. Some symptoms will require a combination of medications. Medication and therapy are often used together since a support system help increase the likelihood of maintaining a medication routine. Psychotherapy treatment may also be administered, it includes job training and social skills training.
While there is no specific treatment for hebephrenic schizophrenia, CBT is highly recommended to address disorganized thinking and behaviors and provide overall support.
