Introverts and Depression: Is There a Link?

What about anxiety?

The link between introversion and anxiety has also been supported by certain evidence discovered by experts.

Introversion and social anxiety

Low extroversion appears to be more strongly associated with depression than with anxiety, according to the 2012 study’s. It also mentioned that poor extroversion can contribute to social anxiety. The relationship between social anxiety and personality factors was thoroughly investigated in a 2020 research.

The study involved 265 participants with social anxiety and 164 participants without the condition. And the authors divided those with social anxiety into three groups.

  • High neuroticism and low extroversion were characteristics of those in Cluster 1.
  • Low extraversion and high conscientiousness were characteristics of the individuals in Cluster 2.
  • High levels of neuroticism and moderate to high levels of extroversion, openness, and conscientiousness were seen in Cluster 3.

However, only roughly a third of individuals fit the stereotype of the “anxious introvert,” according to the results, which revealed those from cluster 1 tended to have more severe social anxiety symptoms. Cluster 3, a group of people with moderate to high extroversion who the researchers refer to as “anxious extroverts,” had the greatest overall levels of social anxiety.
