Nostalgic Depression: What It Is & How to Cope with It

Symptoms of depression

Worry and anxiety

Nostalgia can be dangerous if you are always bothered or have a habit of dwelling on negative and dark thoughts.

Several studies have explained the possible negative effects of nostalgia [5] in a sample of over 200 adults. The samples were majorly University students battling with:

  • Moods, especially if they had anxiety or depression [6]
  • Tendency to worry
  • Nostalgic memories. These memories were described with visual pictures and other sensory details to make studying them easier.

The results showed that the samples who like to worry more often had deep feelings of anxiety after discussing their past.

Sadness or regret

You will feel sad when you remember things from your past and conclude you are not doing well for yourself presently. You may feel less excited about the future when you remember projects, tasks, and goals that you failed to achieve in the past. You begin to wish you could return to the past to complete those projects and achieve that goal. The major cause of sadness is realizing that you cannot change these things, they are in the past, and you have to focus on the present.
