Postpartum Depression – Diagnosis and Treatment

Causes and risk factors for postpartum depression

The exact cause of postpartum depression is unknown, but there are recognized factors that contribute to it. Postpartum depressive episodes can stem from a combination of physical changes and emotional stressors.

Physical factors

While you are pregnant, you have a higher level of estrogen and progesterone. Within hours of giving birth, hormone levels drop back to their previous state. These abrupt changes may contribute to the development of postpartum depression.

Other physical factors that may contribute to the development of postpartum depression include:

  • Low thyroid hormone levels
  • Underlying medical condition
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Drug and alcohol misuse
