What Are the Treatment Options for PTSD?

Medication

The American Psychological Association (APA) [6] recommends certain antidepressants as a treatment for PTSD symptoms.

The APA recognizes that the most common medications used for PTSD treatment are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as:

  • paroxetine (Paxil)
  • fluoxetine (Prozac)
  • sertraline (Zoloft)

It is important to know that sertraline and paroxetine are the only FDA approved SSRIs to treat PTSD.

Conclusion

Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) occurs as an effect of trauma. Trauma can cause psychological, neurological, and emotional effects on a person. You know you may have PTSD If the effect of trauma lasts longer than a month. The primary treatment for the symptoms is psychotherapy. Immediate treatment is needed to avoid complications that can permanently affect one’s daily life.
