9 Common Treatments for Multiple Sclerosis

Beta Interferons

These are one of the most common medications used to treat multiple sclerosis. They reduce the complications and frequency of flares. These medications can also cause fatigue, fever, and chills that go away after few weeks. They also make you susceptible to certain infections because they reduce the number of white blood cells responsible for fighting illnesses. Examples of beta interferons are interferon beta-1a (Avonex, Rebif), interferon beta-1b (Betaseron, extavia), peginterferon beta-1a (plegridy). These medications treat patients by regulating the immune system (the system responsible for fighting germs) so that the protective membrane around the nerves is not attacked.
