Treatments

Cramps usually resolve by themselves. If your cramps are frequent, your doctor may prescribe some medications. These treatments also bring relief:
- Apply Hot Compress
You may apply a towel dipped in warm water [3] to the location of your muscle cramps. Hold it in place for a few minutes. You may also use a heating pad if you have one. It may be more comfortable. Alternatively, taking a warm bath and putting the part of your body where the muscle cramp is in the way of the warm water can help relieve some of the pain. It also reduces tension in the muscle. Make sure the water you use is warm or only mildly hot. It should not be scalding.
- Apply a Cold Compress
You may also use a cold compress [4] to bring relief to a cramped muscle. You may choose to wrap some ice in a washcloth and apply it to the cramped muscle. Keep the cold compress in place for a few minutes before removing it. You may try this a few more times. Ensure that you do not apply ice directly on your skin with an insulating material. Direct contact with ice is bad for your skin as it can damage it. Some people prefer to soak the cloth in cold water and apply the cloth alone.
