Myasthenia Gravis (MG): What You Need To Know

What are the symptoms of myasthenia gravis?

The major symptom of Myasthenia Gravis is weakness in the voluntary skeletal muscles, which are muscles under your control. The inability of muscles to contract normally happens because they can’t be stimulated by nerve impulses. When the transmission of impulses is hindered, communication between nerve and muscle is impaired and weakness occurs.

Weakness linked with MG normally gets worse with more activity and improves with rest.  Some symptoms of MG can include:

  • Trouble talking
  • Problems walking up stairs or lifting objects
  • Facial paralysis [1]
  • Difficulty breathing due to muscle weakness
  • Difficulty swallowing or chewing
  • Fatigue [2]
  • Hoarse voice
  • Drooping of eyelids
  • Double vision [3]

You are not going to experience every symptom, and the level of muscle weakness may vary from day to day.  The severity of the symptoms usually increases over time if not treated properly.
