11 Complications of Parkinson’s Disease

Depression and anxiety

Depression can happen with Parkinson’s disease, and it can exacerbate the manifestations. Some researchers recommend that around 40–50% of people with Parkinson’s disease also feel depressed. They add that this manifestation of the condition can be harder for the individual and their loved ones to cope with than the physical symptoms.

Some other neuropsychiatric manifestations are:

  • mood disturbances
  • anxiety [1]
  • sleep problems
  • psychosis [2]
  • changes in behavior and thinking

However, the symptoms of depression are treatable, and recovery is achievable. Seeking medical help when the symptoms of depression start to occur can give the person a better quality of life, enhanced functionality, and a chance of slowing the symptoms.
