Transverse Myelitis

Transverse myelitis is when there’s inflammation of the spinal cord. It can cause damage to the myelin, resulting to symptoms such as:
- pain and weakness in the limbs
- unusual sensations, such as burning, numbness, or tickling
- bladder and bowel problems
It may be difficult for your doctor to trace the cause of transverse myelitis. But it could result from:
- MS
- neuromyelitis optica
- certain infections, such as varicella-zoster, syphilis, [3] or tuberculosis [4]
- autoimmune conditions, such as lupus or Sjögren’s disease
Transverse myelitis can affect people of any age, however, it is more common amongst people aged 10–19 years and 30–39 years.
