Trigeminal Neuralgia: 10 Treatment Options That Work

Glycerol Injection and Baclofen

Glycerol [2] injections involve administering a drug known as glycerol to Regina around the Gasserian ganglion. The Gasserian ganglion is where the 3 branches of the trigeminal nerve come together. This injection offers pain relief to the areas where the sensory sensation reaches on your skin.

Baclofen is a skeletal muscle relaxant. It is majorly used to treat mild to severe back pain. However, it does not treat trigeminal neuralgia as a muscle relaxant. Instead, it reduces the production of a chemical, known as substance P [3], in the central nervous system. The chemical is responsible for the transmission of pain signals. While baclofen works as a proven therapy for trigeminal neuralgia, other muscle relaxants do not. The drug is usually prescribed to enhance the effects of carbamazepine to ensure fewer side effects.
