Causes and Risk Factors of Osteoporosis

Medications

Certain medications can cause osteoporosis. These include;

Breast cancer drugs: Drugs taken for treatment of breast cancer are highly harmful to the bone. They prevent estrogen production in the body, which causes extremely low blood levels of estrogen.

Heartburn drugs: Medications taken for the treatment of heartburn reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach, lower stomach acid affects the absorption of calcium from food. Proton pump inhibitors are a very good example of heartburn drugs that if used for a long term (several years) at high doses, will increase the chances of having fractures.

Other medications [3] can cause OST as a side effect, including prostate cancer drugs, glucocorticoids, and depo-provera.
