The Effective Treatments for Psoriasis

Phototherapy

This treatment is used for moderate to severe cases of psoriasis. Phototherapy involves using controlled natural or artificial light to treat psoriasis. It is usually administered in a hospital, under a dermatologist’s watch. There are different types of phototherapy.

  • Ultraviolet B (UVB) Phototherapy

There are two types: UVB broadband and UVB narrowband [5]. UVB broadband uses artificial light to treat both isolated and widespread psoriasis resistant to topical treatments. It causes temporary side effects like itching and redness.

UVB narrowband is more effective and is the more popular treatment. It is administered twice or thrice a week until the skin gets better, after which the frequency of treatment reduces. Compared to broadband UVB, this treatment has more severe and enduring side effects.
