Corticosteroids for Inflammation

Corticosteroids are drugs commonly referred to as steroids. They are anti-inflammatory drugs commonly used for treating rheumatologic diseases like lupus or vasculitis. When a patient has sepsis, and there is inflammation, corticosteroids will help relieve the swelling.

Generally, corticosteroids are used to offer relief for the swollen regions of the human body. They also help with redness, allergic reactions, and itching. Apart from sepsis and rheumatologic diseases, sepsis is also used for treating severe allergies, asthma, and skin problems.

According to the Quintiles Prize Lecture [2], corticosteroids work by reversing histone acetylation of activated inflammatory genes by binding coactivators to liganded glucocorticoid receptors and histone recruitment deacetylase-2 to the activated complex.
