Shingles – Treatments, Possible Complications & Prevention

Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids [5] are usually used in the management of shingles, though clinical investigations have shown variable results in its efficacy. Combining a corticosteroid like prednisolone, with an antiviral drug like acyclovir has been effective in reducing the pain associated with herpes zoster, the reduction in pain can be explained by the reducing the inflammation around nerve the nerve endings. The efficacy of corticosteroids in reducing the development of complications is still doubtful. Corticosteroids have the tendency to reduce immunity and should be reserved for use only in patients at risk of developing post herpetic neuralgia.
