Boils and Carbuncles: Symptoms, Treatment, Prevention and More

Causes of a Carbuncle

A carbuncle mostly occurs when Staphylococcus aureus bacteria invades your hair follicles. These bacteria are also known as “staph.” Scrapes and other broken skin increase the chances of bacteria to enter your body and result in an infection. This can lead to boils or carbuncles (a cluster of boils) containing fluid and pus.

It would help to know that the moist parts of your body are more prone to this type of infection because the bacteria lives in these conditions. Carbuncles are commonly found on the thigh, shoulders, and posterior part of the neck. They may also be found on the buttocks, armpits, neck, face, or any region where you sweat and have friction regularly.
